What Is Causing Your Foot Pain?
If you are experiencing foot pain, your doctor will first want to determine the cause of it. Once they know the cause, they can provide the best treatment for the pain. Here are some common causes for foot pain that you might be experiencing.
Plantar Fasciitis
The first foot condition you might have is plantar fasciitis. This is a very common cause of foot pain and occurs when the plantar fascia gets irritated. The plantar fascia is a band of tissue that is located on the bottom of the foot, going from your toes to your heel bone. You may experience the discomfort from plantar fasciitis worse in the morning when you first wake up and put your feet on the floor, as well as when you are standing or walking frequently.
Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
If your foot pain feels like a shooting pain, burning, or tingling, it might be from tarsal tunnel syndrome. This condition is similar to carpal tunnel syndrome except that it occurs in your foot instead of your wrist. With tarsal tunnel syndrome, there is a nerve that goes to your foot and can get compressed by tissue or bone. This is what causes the pain and discomfort of your foot. It may hurt on different parts of your foot.
Metatarsalgia
If you have pain in your foot that is either on the ball of the foot or in the area of your foot before your toes, it could be metatarsalgia. There are bones in this part of your foot called metatarsals, hence the name of the condition. When stress is placed on the metatarsals, it could cause swelling of the bones and tissue, which then causes pain. Metatarsalgia is often from running or jumping continuously over time, making it a common sports-related injury.
Turf Toe
When you get a sprain of your big toe, it is a condition called turf toe. If your big toe bends back and goes past the normal range of how it should bend, it can get sprained and lead to turf toe. With turf toe, the ligaments that are supporting your big toe are torn, which then causes pain when walking or running.
One thing all of these foot pain conditions has in common is that one of the possible treatments is physical therapy. Orthopedic physical therapy helps to relive your pain and start exercising your foot more to increase your mobility.Contact a local specialist, such as Burlington County Orthopaedic Specialist Pa, if you have questions.
