3 Tips That Can Help If You Have Trouble Swallowing Pills

Chances are good that you have seen a family member or friend toss back a handful of medication and swallow it without a problem. However, if you have trouble swallowing pills, you should know that you are not alone. Some people are uncomfortable with swallowing something whole because they are afraid of the choking hazard, while others just haven't found a good technique yet. Regardless of why you might have trouble swallowing pills, however, you should know that you have options. These are three choices that can make it easier for you to take your medication.

1. Cut Pills Up

Have you ever thought about purchasing a pill splitter? These are often used when people need to divide up medication, such as when their dosage recommendation is half of one pill rather than a whole one. However, a pill splitter can also be used to break a larger pill into smaller, more manageable pieces that are easier to swallow. Just make sure that you talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you do this; although some pills can be safely broken up, others should not be broken at all.

2. Ask for a Liquid Instead

If you haven't thought about asking for the liquid form of your medications yet, it's a good idea to do so. There may be an alternative at your regular local pharmacy, or you may be able to go to a compounding pharmacy. Since compounding pharmacies specialize in custom medication to suit their customers' needs, you should be able to opt for a liquid alternative. Some will even add flavoring to the liquid medication to make it a little more pleasant to taste.

3. Sneak it in Your Food

Some people trick their dogs into taking pills by hiding them in a hot dog or other tasty treat, and you can "trick" yourself into swallowing a pill this way, too. Consider adding your pill to a hot dog, a banana or another favorite food. If you position it correctly, you should be able to swallow the entire pill at once when taking a bite. You can also ask your doctor if it's acceptable for you to crush your pills into a fine dust, which can then be added to pudding or another similar snack.

It can be tough to swallow pills, and some people never get used to it. Luckily, trying one or all three of these tips should make it a bit easier for you. For more information you can go to sites like those for your local compounding pharmacy.
